Tallahassee Branch of the University of Florida was created in September of 1946. Men were housed in the former barracks of Dale Mabry Field, which was deactivated as a military air base at the end of World War II. When the state legislature authorized co-education at Florida State College for Women, renaming it Florida State University in 1947, this area became known as West Campus.
